Urban Landscaping and Greening of the River Corridor

As part of the long-term vision of the Nairobi River Regeneration Programme, a comprehensive urban landscape component is planned to transform the river corridor into a healthy, attractive, and people-centred public space. These landscape interventions will be implemented after completion of the core river restoration works, to ensure that environmental rehabilitation of the river system is firmly in place before public-facing developments begin. The Nairobi Rivers Commission (NRC) will coordinate this phase in collaboration with relevant government agencies, communities, and partners.

The planned urban landscape elements include greening initiatives, tree planting, playgrounds, and community centres. Together, these interventions are intended to enhance environmental quality, improve public well-being, and create inclusive spaces that support social cohesion and urban resilience.

Greening of the River Corridor

Greening initiatives will focus on restoring and enhancing natural vegetation along the riverbanks and within designated public spaces. This will include the establishment of grassed areas, landscaped open spaces, and native plant species that support biodiversity and improve microclimates. Greening the corridor will help stabilize riverbanks, reduce erosion, improve air quality and create visually appealing environments that encourage responsible public use of the riverfront.

Tree Planting
Tree planting will form a central component of the urban landscape strategy. Indigenous and climate-resilient tree species will be planted to strengthen riparian buffers, provide shade, and support ecological restoration. Beyond environmental benefits, increased tree cover will contribute to cooling urban temperatures, improving public health, and enhancing the overall character of the river corridor as a green urban asset.

Playgrounds and Recreational Spaces

Planned playgrounds and recreational areas will provide safe, accessible spaces for children and families to enjoy leisure activities close to their neighbourhoods. These facilities will be designed to blend seamlessly with the natural environment, promoting outdoor activity while fostering a sense of ownership and stewardship of the river corridor among surrounding communities.

Community Centres

Community centres are proposed to serve as hubs for social interaction, learning, and civic engagement along the river corridor. These spaces will support community meetings, environmental education, youth activities, and livelihood initiatives linked to river conservation. By providing shared facilities, the centres will strengthen community participation and ensure that local residents remain active partners in the long-term stewardship of the regenerated river.

A Phased and Sustainable Approach

The implementation of these urban landscape components will be carefully phased, commencing only after the river restoration works are substantially completed. This approach ensures that investments in public spaces are protected and aligned with the ecological health of the river system.

Once realized, the comprehensive urban landscape will help redefine the Nairobi River corridor as a green, inclusive, and resilient public space—supporting environmental sustainability, social well-being, and a higher quality of urban life for all.
