Kamukunji People's Park

The Kamukunji People’s Park is one of the flagship urban renewal interventions being implemented under the Nairobi River Regeneration Programme. The project demonstrates how river restoration can go hand in hand with community development, social inclusion and the creation of safe, functional public spaces within the city.

Background and Context

Kamukunji holds a unique place in Kenya’s history as a symbol of civic engagement, social justice and collective action. Over the years, however, parts of the Kamukunji area—particularly sections adjacent to the Nairobi River—experienced environmental degradation, encroachment, inadequate sanitation and the loss of usable public space. Flooding, waste accumulation and poor drainage further reduced the area’s ability to serve the surrounding community.

These challenges underscored the need for an integrated approach that addressed both river health and the social infrastructure of the neighbourhood. Within the broader Nairobi River Regeneration vision, Kamukunji was identified as a priority site for community-centred urban renewal.

NRC’s Coordinating Role

As a coordinating institution, NRC brings together National and County Government Agencies, Partners, Technical Experts and community stakeholders to ensure that projects along the river corridor are aligned with the overall regeneration Masterplan. The Kamukunji Community Project is implemented within this multi-agency framework, ensuring that environmental restoration, infrastructure development and community needs are addressed coherently and sustainably.

Project Scope and Ongoing Works

The Kamukunji Community Project aims to transform previously underutilized and environmentally stressed land into a safe, inclusive and vibrant public space. Construction is currently underway and has reached approximately 60 percent completion.

Key components of the project include the development of a football pitch and multi-purpose lawns to support sports and youth engagement, the construction of changing rooms and related amenities, and a community center to host social, cultural and civic activities. It also features an amphitheater designed to host public gatherings, performances and community dialogue. These facilities are being developed alongside river training and landscaping to enhance safety, improve drainage, and protect the riverbanks from further degradation.

Community Impact

The Kamukunji Community Project aims to deliver tangible social and environmental benefits. By reclaiming and upgrading public space along the Nairobi River, the project promotes healthier lifestyles, strengthens social cohesion and provides safe recreational facilities for residents, particularly young people. At the same time, improved riverbank management and landscaping reduce flood risks and contribute to a cleaner urban environment.

Community engagement has been central to the project, with local stakeholders participating in consultations and planning to ensure that the facilities meet real community needs and aspirations.

Looking Ahead

Once completed, the Kamukunji Community Project will stand as a visible example of how integrated river regeneration can restore dignity to public spaces and enhance the quality of life for urban communities. The project aligns with broader efforts to reclaim the Nairobi River as a backbone of the city’s blue and green infrastructure.

As implementation continues, NRC will work with the community to ensure the project’s sustainability, effective management, and integration into the broader Nairobi River Regeneration Programme, contributing to a cleaner, safer, and more inclusive Nairobi for all.
