Presidential Visit to Nairobi River Regeneration Project
Nairobi Rivers Commission CEO Brig. (Rtd) Joseph Muracia today led the multi-agency technical team of the Nairobi River Regeneration Project (NRRP) Project in welcoming His Excellency William Ruto along the river corridor to assess the progress made so far.
The inspection tour began at Lucky Summer in Ruaraka Sub-County, where the President reviewed ongoing construction of trunk sewer lines designed to eliminate raw sewage discharge into the Nairobi River. Col. Njoroge, representing the Nairobi Rivers Commission (NRC) as the coordinating agency, guided the President through the technical aspects of the sewer works, highlighting how the system will expand sanitation coverage, improve public health, and restore ecological integrity. The President underscored the critical role of modern sewer infrastructure in ensuring that Nairobi’s rivers are protected for current and future generations.
The Presidential delegation then moved to the Dandora Dumpsite near Ngomongo Quarry, one of Nairobi’s major solid waste hotspots. The President was briefed him on ongoing rehabilitation efforts and the implementation of modern waste management systems. He was shown how the project is addressing decades of unmanaged waste, preventing further pollution of the river and reclaiming degraded land along the riparian corridor. He reiterated the Government’s commitment to integrating waste management and river restoration as part of Nairobi’s urban renewal agenda.
The inspection proceeded to Korogocho Bridge, where the President assessed cleanup and desilting works along the riverbanks. Col. Njoroge highlighted measures taken to stabilize riverbanks, prevent erosion and establish protected riparian zones. The interventions are also creating employment opportunities for local youth engaged in environmental restoration, linking ecological recovery to socio-economic empowerment. The President commended the coordinated efforts, emphasizing the importance of multi-agency collaboration in ensuring the long-term success of the project.
The tour concluded at Kamukunji, where the President engaged local residents and reiterated that the Nairobi River Regeneration Programme is more than an environmental project. It integrates sewer expansion, wastewater treatment, solid waste management reform, flood control, climate resilience, housing and creation of public spaces along the river corridor. He emphasized that these initiatives are transforming the river into a driver of sustainable development and improved quality of life for the communities living along its banks.
The Nairobi River Regeneration Project continues to advance steadily, with strategic interventions along the river corridor delivering cleaner waterways, safer communities, employment opportunities, and a greener, healthier city for all Nairobi residents.
