Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) Corridors

As part of the Nairobi River Regeneration Programme, planned transport infrastructure interventions are designed to improve mobility, safety, and connectivity along the river corridor while supporting environmental restoration and inclusive urban development. These works, which are yet to commence, will form an integral component of the broader regeneration efforts coordinated by the Nairobi Rivers Commission (NRC).

The proposed transport infrastructure will focus on three key elements: foot paths, pedestrian bridges, and motorized bridges. Together, these interventions aim to enhance access across and along the river, promote non-motorized transport, and improve linkages between communities on either side of the river.

Foot Paths
Planned foot paths along the river corridor will provide safe, accessible, and continuous walkways for pedestrians. These paths are intended to support daily movement, recreation, and riverfront use, while also encouraging walking as a sustainable mode of transport. Designed with universal access in mind, the foot paths will integrate with green spaces and riparian restoration efforts, ensuring that mobility improvements go hand in hand with environmental protection.

Pedestrian Bridges
Pedestrian bridges are proposed at strategic crossing points to improve safe movement across the river, particularly in areas where communities are currently separated by the watercourse. These bridges will reduce reliance on unsafe informal crossings, enhance access to schools, markets, health facilities, and public transport, and strengthen social and economic interactions within riverine neighbourhoods.

Motorized Bridges
The programme also предусматривает the construction of motorized bridges at key locations to improve vehicular connectivity and ease movement across the river. These bridges will be designed to accommodate vehicles while minimizing environmental impact on the river and its riparian zones. Improved crossings are expected to reduce travel time, enhance emergency response, and support economic activity in adjacent areas.

Supporting Regeneration and Urban Resilience
All planned transport infrastructure will be developed in alignment with the Nairobi River Basin Masterplan and the Special Planning Area framework. Environmental safeguards, community engagement, and coordination with relevant agencies will guide the design and implementation process to ensure that infrastructure development supports long-term river health and urban resilience.

Once implemented, these transport interventions will contribute to safer mobility, improved accessibility, and a more connected city—reinforcing the Nairobi River corridor as a functional, inclusive, and sustainable urban space.
