The Nairobi Rivers Basin Regeneration Program (NABREP)

As outlined in the mandate, the commission has developed the Nairobi Rivers Basin Regeneration Programme (NABREP), through engaging and coordinating all the stakeholders in developing an Action Plan known as the Nairobi Rivers Recovery Strategy (NRRS). The (NRRS) was developed collectively by the stake holder and involved a detailed analysis of the river’s pollution sources within the River Basin. The Action plan was developed to guide the process of Rriver basin regeneration. The action plan recommended 10 (Ten) Thematic areas related to river pollution which must to be addressed to achieve the vision of the commission. The ten thematic areas as listed here below:

  1. Catchment Protection and Restoration.
  2. Riparian and Wetlands Reclamation and Protection.
  3. Waste to the Rivers (solid waste, Sewerage, industrial and institutional waste).
  4. Drainage and Hydrology.
  5. Land-Use.
  6. People/ Social.
  7. Technical – Science and Research.
  8. Resources and Resource Mobilization.
  9. Monitoring and Evaluation.
  10. Publicity and Communication.

The commission was advised to first plan to address the first four issues (a-d) above as the others cut across and are supportive to the four thematic areas.

The Action Plan document was validated in a stakeholders meeting held at Windsor Hotel and Golf Resort on 01 Sept 2023 where 49 different institutions were represented, MOD inclusive. The commission is currently implementing the Action Plan through thematic working groups
