CEO Addressing During the Climate Action Summit

Climate Action Summit

The Nairobi Rivers Commission (NRC) was among the key organisers of a high-level Climate Summit, reinforcing its leadership role in advancing climate resilience, environmental restoration, and sustainable urban development under the Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Programme.

The summit brought together policymakers, climate experts, development partners, civil society organisations, and youth leaders to explore practical and inclusive solutions to climate change, with a strong focus on urban ecosystems, river restoration, and community-driven climate action.

As a co-organiser, NRC highlighted river regeneration as a strategic climate adaptation and mitigation intervention, noting that healthy river systems are essential for flood management, pollution control, biodiversity conservation, and urban cooling.

The Commission showcased how the Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Programme integrates climate-smart solutions, including:

  • Protection and restoration of riparian corridors

  • Improved wastewater and sewer infrastructure

  • Solid waste management interventions

  • Development of green public spaces and non-motorised transport corridors

These initiatives are aimed at strengthening Nairobi’s resilience to climate shocks while improving the quality of life for residents.

NRC emphasized the central role of youth and community participation in climate action, particularly through programmes such as Climate WorX Mtaani, which links environmental restoration with employment creation, skills development, and community ownership.

The Commission noted that inclusive engagement is critical to ensuring the sustainability and long-term impact of climate interventions.

Strengthening Partnerships for Climate Resilience

The summit provided a platform for NRC, as a co-convener, to engage with national and county government agencies, development partners, and climate actors on strengthening coordination and aligning climate initiatives with national and county climate priorities.

Discussions focused on enhancing collaboration in climate planning, financing, and implementation to deliver integrated and people-centred solutions.

NRC reaffirmed its commitment to driving climate-responsive programmes that balance environmental protection, social inclusion, and economic development. The Commission reiterated that river regeneration remains a cornerstone of Nairobi’s climate resilience agenda and a critical investment in the city’s sustainable future.

As climate risks continue to intensify, NRC remains dedicated to working with partners and communities to deliver impactful climate solutions that protect ecosystems, enhance public safety, and promote sustainable urban growth.
